While waiting for the Ski Train on March 30......
Author: rcfarewell

All,

While waiting for the eastbound Ski Train on the afternoon of March 30 a week or two ago, UP's loaded 'Oil Cans' dropped down the Moffat mainline into Coal Creek, CO. Power for the 'Cans was UP 9581, 6670, 5754 on the point, while UP 7065 and 6697 were rear DPU's.

Comments?

Hey, am having problems getting the JPEGs to stay crisp from TIF's. Thanks for looking and not "flaming" me on the lack of crispness. I'll get it figured out soon......I'm old!!!

How are the images ending up as TIF's?  I strongly recommend working off of your camera's RAW files.  It is an absolute game changer.

looks like a hopper car, some oil trains do not have to have that  even i believe

Not all oil trains need them, depends on how the cargo is classified, is it flammable or combustible? You would have to check the placard to be sure.

Rich, you did better then me on 30 March 2024.  I was at Rocky Siding that morning saw signal lite for a westbound move - Turned out to be a light power move-!

All,

I guess I should have mentioned that I still shoot film (Provia 100), then scan the slides on my trusty Epson 4870 and then save the resulting scan as TIFFs. I'll try saving the scans as JPEGs next, then moving them over to Trainorders sized down. The buffer cars (one in front, one in rear) were old covered hoppers. I've seen both UP and BNSF 'Cans with and without buffer cars.

Thanks for the responses!

Thanks for posting.  Seems odd they'd have a DC engine leading an AC consist.  You'd think it owuld be all AC power on that heavy train.  Just saying.

Photoshop handles all aspects of downsizing and reformatting .tiff images-to-.jpg files very well.  $10 per month... well worth it. Keep the original .tiff image as a permanent archive, make a copy of it to do your initial corrections / enhancements / cropping in .tiff format, etc., and save it BEFORE downsizing and converting to .jpg format.  Sharpen AFTER downsizing and creation of the .jpg format file.  In my personal experience, if you save the final .jpg image at 1600 dpi, it seems to retain sharpness better after TO's software automatically converts it to 1000 dpi. when you download it for publication.  Your experience may vary.  Experiment.

Empties do not require buffer cars however they usually are in the consist to keep them positioned for the next loaded train.

The 9581 is a DC to AC convert
