Are "forced transfers" of new hires still going on?
Author: Lackawanna484

A while back there was a discussion of how railroad trainees hired in Idaho, Montana, etc were being assigned to Los Angeles etc to fill critically low boards.

Is that still going on, or was it a one-off?  I could understand a lot of people deciding that was a bad idea, and quitting very quickly.

Outside of offering temporary transfers the only “forcing” going on now is to the furlough board, at least on Big Orange

AFIK they are still hiring for specific locations so you know going in where you MIGHT be located.
That's all subject to change depending on traffic levels.

Used to be called "chasing your senority". If you could not hold the terminal you were at in slow times, you might have to go to a less desireable terminal to keep from being furloughed. BNSF in the northwest has a restricted senority district that has long kept people from bumping their was into terminals there from outside the region.
