Traffic levels on the Ex Soo (Portal to MSP)
Author: Asheville_G

With the upcoming 2816 run, it got me thinking about opposing traffic.

What’s the current traffic levels like on the Ex Soo (CPKC) between the Canadian border at North Portal down through Minot to the Twin Cities?

Any idea what symbols are used on movements?

Appreciate any insight.

I call this line "The Hidden Mainline" because it is rarely discussed in the railfan community. But it is the key line between the US and western Canada. All CTC now with 49 MPH running.

Why 49 mph if it has signals? How long has it had them?

The following are the daily road trains:

148 Vancouver Deltaport, BC - Bensenville, IL
149 Bensenville, IL - Vancouver Deltaport, BC
240 Sutherland, SK - St. Paul, MN
241 St. Paul, MN - Sutherland, SK
242 Edmonton Lambton Park, AB - St. Paul, MN
243 St. Paul, MN - Edmonton Clover Bar, AB
444 Calgary Alyth, AB - St. Paul, MN
445 St. Paul, MN - Medicine Hat, AB

I’m sure there are a good handful of various bulk unit trains a day as well.

The line from Portal to Glenwood, MN (west of Minneapolis) got upgraded within the last few years, I'm guessing around the time that the oil trains were running hot and heavy. the line from Glemwood to Minneapolis has alway been CTC as far as I can remember.

How far a part are the sidings?  How long is the average siding?  Is there a online version of the timetable available?  What is the AAR frequency?

Most sidings are 10,000' or longer, but each Sub
has a shorter siding in the 7500' range.

Radio Freq are as follows
Portal Sub - Portal to Harvey, ND 161.370
Carrington Sub - Harvey to Enderlin, ND 160.770
Elbow Lake Sub - Enderlin, ND to Glenwood, MN
161.085
Paynesville Sub - Glenwood to Minneapolis, MN
161.370
Detroit Lakes Sub going north from Glenwood
towards Winnipeg
is TWC on 161.520 and sees trains 240/241.
