Another KP bonus
Author: santafe199

Another phone tip, another excuse to get outta the house and go be a railfan on the run. This time it was a coal train heading into Kansas City. Coal loads used to be pretty common on the KP, but recently that traffic has all but disappeared. So even with a few clouds up yonder it was worth the effort. I gave it a chase as far as St Marys.

My tipster also let me know when the SITP was leaving Salina. So I dropped back and picked him up at Wamego. But my second chase fizzled out when the SITP ran into a traffic jam at Menoken. Apparently 2 other eastbound trains were clogging up the works. But I’ll bet there was more shenanigans afoot closer to downtown. Quite often trains to & from the GSR can create their own traffic jam without any help from the KP or the main line down from Marysville. I did find the head end of one of the jammed up trains. And just as I was pulling up to the Brickyard Rd crossing near Ruby Yard the Master Artist was painting a nice little scene. I just rolled the window down and clipped off a sequence, easy as that...

1. UP 7074 is stopped behind some RR indigestion on up ahead. The shy Mr Sol was peeking out from under the all-day cloud cover. It’s 7:52 PM on April 20, 2024 in Topeka, KS.

Thanks for the artwork!

Nice catch, easy steering wheel railfanning, zip, zip then you're through. I find interesting the light reflections on the cars sides with two types of lighting, the sun's reflection higher up and the brighter (whiter?) headlight reflection lower down the sides. Good planning... ;^)

(chuckling!) Yeah, as if... More like lucky timing and sheer dumb luck. But thanks just the same for the kind words... :^)

Great stuff Lance! The glint on the side of the hoppers, and silhouettes of the pole line really make the image.
