Sunday Afternoon along the Snake
Author: funnelfan

Late sunday afternoon I went over to check out progress on the Payette, ID siding extension when I heard the detector south of Ontario ring off. So I headed west to catch what turned out to be two back to back westbounds running along the Snake River east of Cobb, ID.

1 & 2 are of a 3x4x2 OWVT4 Soda Ash train with UP 7707, 2610, 9038 x 8513, 6149, 5616, 5310 x 6506, 7380.
3. Westbound 5x1x0 manifest, probably a MPCHK but not sure. Power was UP 9017, 6229, 6776, 8837, 7839 x 2759

Another two photos of the manifest train.
Payette Siding Extension updates. The old detector at MP507.0 has been decommissioned and a new one at MP512.4 is now active. The old detector was too close the new west end of Payette Siding, so it had to be moved.
 The signals are going up and starting to be cut in, those includes the east end of Crystal Siding. The intermediate signal between Payette and Crystal is being removed soon, so the signals at the west end of Payette and east end of Crystal need the second signal head for the approach signal to the next siding. The track for the siding extension is down but yet to be ballasted. The turnout for the new west end of the siding was cut in last week. Panel track to replace the old west end turnout is also ready to be installed. The 19th Ave xing is now closed but not yet removed. That means going up to north 9th st or south into downtown Payette to cross the tracks. The county should have insisted on crossing gates at 9th st for closing 19th ave, as that crossing only has yield signs.

Some of the more interesting cars from the manifest train;

PLCX 20471 near Cobb, ID April 21st, 2024. P_S 4750cuft 3-bay covered hopper. It appears to say FEED on the left end of the car, but spilled commodity has obscured most markings on the car. Luckily the number on the end of the car was still readable.

CNW 178287 P-S 4750cuft 3-bay covered hopper blt 3-80 still in good shape.

SHPX 210027 near Cobb, ID April 21st, 2024. ARI 13,700gal tankcar blt 12-2008 hauling Molten Sulfur.

Lovely photos, and thanks for the update on Payette siding.

Are we back to MPCHK as a regular symbol now? For a while it seemed like it was MGRHK (which often looked like it had a Pocatello pickup) and then MPCPD...
