UP Sprint train?
Author: memphisfreight

Speaking of single engine trains, watching the Laramie cam and just saw at 13:58 camera time the UP 7252 roar past EB with 35 UPS trailers and 2 containers.   Anyone know what this was, symbol, etc?    Thx..

The ZLBDV usually does the pickup at SLC unless it's running late, hence the extra train being run to handle the UPS traffic to Denver. Funny seeing the single unit on there.

UP runs a UPS "Z" train between SLC and DEN???  Why not just run it on the D&RGW??  Straight shot, mostly empty rails, right?

I believe the UP routing to Denver is faster.  Also, UP doesn't even run their SLC - Denver manifests over the DRGW anymore.  It's just a coal route, plus some BNSF and Amtrak traffic.  Almost forgot, the Rocky Mountaineer runs a few days a week now, but not the entire stretch.

You can gage it by watching the Laramie cam, if you have access.  The WB Z train DEN-SLC tends to go by the cam around 8-10am camera time, the EB counterpart somewhere between 2-5pm give or take.   It's a decent sized train but nowhere near the monsters they run elsewhere.

It might make the Moffat Route of value.

The old Rail Blazer used to do it with two crews each way. Crew change at Grand Junction both ways.

The DVSC is now a Long Beach train (DVLB), handling traffic for Denver-SLC, Denver to Long Beach, Chicago to Las Vegas (p/o SLCIT), and leftover SLC-Long beach. Think they run a separate SLC-Long Beach train a few hours earlier?

As stated above, if the Z-LBDV is running behind they will send an extra DVSC to protect the UPS traffic. Doesn't happen a lot, but it is frequent enough.

Does the biz train ever change crews? Or do they carry their relief crew on the train like the Aussies do it?
