Tagged! (a work of art)
Author: santafe199

This old Rock Island 40-footer has been sitting here so long all the original paint has faded clean away. That’s understandable, though. This car has been sitting here at least the better part of the past 6 decades: ( WAG Wednesday: Salina, KS ala 1966 (the other 3) (trainorders.com) ). And now it’s been “tagged”. But this is a good one! Some local(?) artist has attached a very classy piece of work to this car. I don’t know if it was commissioned, or if it was just random. But I’m sure nobody is complaining over this tagging job... ;^)

1. CRI&P 134043 has been sitting here in Salina, KS since at least 1966. But now it’s sporting some new artwork on February 25, 2024.

Thanks for looking back & forth!

I agree.  Unlike most taggers, this is definitely a work of art.

Aside from the artwork (which clearly took some talent), its an interesting car too; not too many still around with the 5-5-5 Murphy ends.  That side sill also gives it away as a rebuild of an older (likely wood sheathed) car.

Much better than the ignorant Gibberish seen on most freight cars.

Really cool work on the car. But sorry folks, unless this was a commissioned piece, ya'll can't pick and choose which grafitti is acceptable. Its all or nothing! Wondering if the law and order folks on this forum will comment.

So you poop all over a work of art on a former boxcar that has NO wheels and hasn't budged an inch in 6 decades??? Wow...

Very interesting, Lance. I really liked the cross reference to your post from 2012 with the photo from 1966. Great post.

If they didn't have the permission of the owner, then yes, this is vandalism.

wow... Can you please point me in the direction of where I "pooped all over" the artwork. If you actually read my comment, it begins with, "Really cool work on the car". To reiterate that point I think the piece on the boxcar is spectacular.

I read it. And I appreciated it. And if you would have stopped right there it would have been great. But you had to admonish people with your "all or nothing"  CRAP. This was intended to be a light-hearted thread, for people to have some fun with. But you had to spread your "whatever" all over it. Nice going...

Thanks! I guess with such a click baity thread title and the topic of graffiti, I assumed you were prepared for some dirt to fly from the anti and pro grafitti camps.

Nailed it.

Nice example of street art Lance, thanks for posting.

So where is the line on this? Is the chalk art from talented car knockers acceptable or not? Pretty they weren’t commissioned.

I wonder if it's a nod to Hobo Shoestring who just passed away?  Looks a lot like him.

I'd like to see the boxcar eventually perseved with wheels under it in the original Rock Island paint scheme. It would look great in a photo freight.

(chuckling) I smiled when I shot this scene. And I already had the thread mostly written in my mind before I got home. It was a real pleasure to see it for a couple of reasons. It was on a car that wasn't on any active roster, so there are no problems with reading the car #, capy plate info and so forth. Plus the quality of this artwork is about 140 notches better than any of the tagging $#!+ I've ever seen anywhere. It was gonna be fun to post, and I thought it would be a fun change of pace for TO members to see a real "work of art" instead of the usual bleep. Instead, the thread gets hijacked to some other mouthy agenda and I get assailed for defending my original intent. Oh well, consider the source. As for all kinds of markings on cars, I broke in with simple chalk marks such as Sleeping Herby & Bozo Texino, among others. Great stuff! But the practice lost me when they went to the current crap of obliterating, or nearly obliterating an entire car side. I know from my career how much work that causes fellow railroaders who have to work with that info. So I don't condone it at all. And I don't post any of it without good reason...

I have to confess that I've never heard of "Hobo Shoestring", so that possibility sounds pretty cool! Just as all talented artists use, the image does have an authentic signature down by the right elbow...

The artists signature is in the lower left corner, this was probably a commissioned piece. Idiot taggers don't usually have a nice signature for their "art".
