The westbound train piled up just after the I-40 overpass. Good thing it didn't pile up under the overpass.

I see lots of LINEAGE reefers in the train--perhaps the fire is from spilled diesel fuel for the reefers?

Poor LINEAGE has taken a beating lately, with other derailments also taking some of their cars.  So far, with this accident, they've lost 10-15 cars this year.  Ouch.  They have a good fleet, but every car counts in their smaller fleet.

Lineage didn't have such good luck in Finley (Kennewick WA) last Sunday either. Lost one of their freezer storage buildings and a couple of refer cars. 500K sq. ft.

Halfway between the I-40 overpass (MP 178.43) and the cross in the center of Ted's Acme map is a facing-point switch off Main 1, the north track, at MP 178.57.  NM-AZ border is MP 179.28.  That switch may be where things went to hell.  In the KOAT video, the train looked to me like it was on Main 1.

Does anyone know how long this train was and how it was configured? Is it a massive PSR train being run by EMS? Those magically keep leaving the rail lately..... but massive trains are "safe"

Not necessarily that long of a manifest train? But the obvious empty in the middle is mildly concerning to me at least.

123.2 TOB….101 loads, 3 empties, 12,886 tons…

That was the problem.

Like Mr. MRL said…That empty in the middle with all that tonnage ahead of and behind it was just asking for trouble…I wouldn’t be surprised either if that contributed to the wreck.

I tell ya though…whoever says BNSF hasn’t adopted PSR…they’ve got another thing coming.

Wonder if they’ll detour anything over Raton?

You are being facetious, aren't you?

I really don't see a single empty car between loaded cars as being much of a problem. You would much rather have that than a string of empty cars ahead of a bunch of loads. That is where buff forces can cause empties to pop off the tracks. 30 tons is a typical empty weight of a car, especially a gondola.
