Where to find a caboose?
Author: HogheadMike

I have a friend in the Central Coast of California that wants a caboose for his property and is prepared to pay for shipping and everything.  He assumed that because I work for the railroad that I may know where to find one, and I do not have any idea.  Does anyone out there know where one can be found, preferably around California?  He wants to put it on rails and everything, so in tact would be what he wants.  Yes, I know it's expensive to move one, but I guess he's not concerned with that and I said I'd ask around on the railroad forums.

Any ideas?

You can always start with Ozark.  https://ozarkmountainrailcar.com/railEquipmentGrid.php?category=Cabooses
You see the come up on Facebook markeplace from time to time.

A google search for "caboose for sale" listed several including Ozark above.  It even offered a site called http://www.cabooses4sale.com/

I know there’s a handful of cabooses parked outside the Vincent Hills Station steakhouse. Acton/ Palmdale Ca. they might be willing to part with one for the right price. Very close to the 14 HWY.

There's a pretty nice Santa Fe car sitting on the east side of I-29, at Mound City, MO. No damage I can see from the car, just needs paint. About a block west of 59 highway st on W. Gillis st.

Our Tyler Tx Cotton Belt depot museum just missed out in this one, late to the party by 24 hours.

It was free, just come get it and get it quickly.  A train museum in San Antonio beat
us to the punch.  Owner purchased the property with caboose on it and needed it
gone now, else he was going to scrap it.  It was located in Cresson Tx up until today
when it was loaded up on a lowboy for the trip to the Alamo city.

As Jeff mentioned, I stopped on the way home from work a few times at the Vincent Grade Restaurant off HWY 14 in Palmdale CA when I was looking to re-paint ours as they have a UP CA-6 as one of their collection along with atlest 6 SP. I did not talk direct to the owner but i would bet he might entertain the idea if you came in with an offer. Did your friend have plans when he acquires one?

Crucible in Oakland, CA has an ex SP caboose that they’re selling, which has been on their property for ~15 years. I saw a listing on Facebook market place several weeks ago which stated they need to sell it to make room for space.

Good luck!

I don't have a caboose, but you got me curious, so I checked Craigslist in the San Diego / So Cal area. Still no caboose, but if your friend needs a stove for their cool backyard caboose fort, here's one:

"Southern Pacific (S.P.) railroad caboose coal/wood burning stove circa 1905. These were made solely for Southern Pacific and are more rare than a sighting of Bigfoot, or winning big at the casinos. Its in very nice shape, but missing one burner top. $850.00 call Mike."
