Western Railroad Discussion > Barge hits abandoned RR Bridge to Pelican Island, TexasDate: 05/15/24 11:15 Barge hits abandoned RR Bridge to Pelican Island, Texas Author: cozephyr Gulf Intracoastal Waterway has been closed account barge hit the abandoned railroad bridge and damaged the only highway bridge between Galveston, Texas, to Pelican Island, Texas, Wednesday morning, 15 May 2024.
At about 10 a.m., the vessel under tow broke loose and slammed into the railroad side of the bridge, Henry said. The rail portion is not in use. Officials believe two crew members on the ship were either thrown or jumped off, but they were rescued quickly, Henry told ABC13. Vacuum oil gas is leaking from the barge, which has a capacity of 30,000 gallons. It wasn't immediately known how much oil gas the barge was carrying. Apparently the term has been butchered possibly by someone.

Why would anyone build a railroad bridge that cost tens, hundreds or thousands of thousands of dollars that wouldn't support a locomotive? I don't dispute this happened but who would have allowed the expenditure? Lierally money flushed down a toilet!
From aerial photos it appears that the rails may have supported some sort of shipbuilding but any recent images show it as unused. Today's photos show pieces of the already abandoned rail bridge destroyed but at a glance it seems this may have prevented severe damage to the road bridge itself. The Coast Guard and others will determine the safe pasage going forward. Many years ago I crossed the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel after literally miles of the roadway were destroyed by a barge tossed by stormy seas, but one lane remained and travel alternated north and south using traffic lights. It was eerie to see the western lane upheaved for miles on end. Gonut Date: 05/15/24 21:58 Re: Barge hits abandoned RR Bridge to Pelican Island, Texas Author: PHall Gonut1 Wrote:

Date: 05/16/24 00:29 Re: Barge hits abandoned RR Bridge to Pelican Island, Texas Author: EricSP Vacuum gas oil (not oil gas) is a cut off of a vacuum distillation unit. Gas oils are toward the heavier side. I think it is a little heavier than diesel.
30,000 gallons sounds small for a barge unless it has multiple tanks and that is the size of the leaking tank. 30,000 barrels (1.26 millon gallons) might be a capacity of a single tank barge. It looks like it is a barge with generators and fuel tanks for the generators, and possibly other uses. https://abc13.com/post/galveston-bridge-closure-pelican-island-causeway-news/14820281/ Edited 2 time(s).
