Port of Nevada to Oakland Intermodal Begins
Author: milepost20

The Port of Nevada, located along the UP between Fernley and Hazen east of Sparks, has now started intermodal service to and from the Port of Oakland thanks to a partnership with Union Pacific and CMA CGM Group.

“Direct rail access between Reno and the West Coast significantly increases the amount of cargo freight that can be shipped,” Stuart Lichter, president of the Port of Nevada and its owner, Industrial Realty Group, said in a statement. “This collaborative venture will provide our clients with a more efficient, reliable, and environmentally sensitive way to transport goods.”

This Free Trade Zone facility received its first containers on June 3.  It has 7000' of track on 224 acres.  Any reports that UP is making direct pickups and setouts at the site or whether a local job is hauling the traffic to Sparks for further movement?  The intermodal symbol forwarding the traffic to Oakland?

Why does it just not go to Oakland via rail?

I guess we will see a bunch of distribution warehouses built near the Port of Nevada?

Okay as long as we don't have to subsidize trucks over Donner Pass by replacing the concrete they continuously crack on I-80.

IIRC the greater Reno area has large distribution centers/warehouses sited so that the goods held are not subject to California's inventory tax.

As does Las Vegas. The new Savage Transload facility in Cedar City UT is up and running, IM is no
longer just a large yard like the LATC or Lathrop.

FYI - California eliminated the inventory tax decades ago. I would wager the real reason folks locate their distributions centers in Reno is to avoid California's many quirky laws.

Not to mention that a square foot of warehouse in Nevada is a bit less expensive than
comparable space in California.

Yup. But the reason there's a "bit" of a cost difference can be seen, especially from the air.

Warehouse regions like the Inland Empire and the Central Valley are running out of space, and conflicting with farms and residential areas. Bit less land use competition in Fernley/Hazen area, at least for now. IM(not so Humble)O.

Perfect setup for after California falls into the sea

Thank you TJY for the correction on the CA inventory tax.
