Nevada Northern Rwy - Vote for 250th Year Paint Scheme
Author: funnelfan

On July 4, 2026, our nation will commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. This milestone is an opportunity to reflect on our past, honor the contributions of all Americans, and envision a future for the next generation and beyond. In tribute, the Nevada Northern Railway Museum will renumber and repaint our EMD SD-9 Locomotive 204, transforming it into Locomotive 250 with a special paint scheme. And YOU can vote on the paint scheme.

There are a large number of schemes to choose from, but I like #43 the best.  VOTE FOR #43.

Here is a reminder, a side view that looks good on paper or computer screen doesn't mean it will look good in photos. MRL and KCS had units with the blue and stars wrapped around the nose, and it does not look good. It can be considered a visibility hazard compared the typical white stripes on the nose. PLEASE do not make that mistake again.

Nice in that it incorporates all the basics but it is way too visually "busy".

#43 is too busy, yet I'd rank it high at 5th.  #27 and #25 are sharp (I'm a big fan of the round seal) and I applaud how #23 adds interest by incorporating a moderate amount of orange.  #38 is very creative yet understated, the interpretation of the flag on the nose is great.  The stars not being random and not overwheliming makes a big difference.  A tough decision between #38 and #23.  I voted for the latter.

The fine print says the pulbic vote is only 1/5th of the criteria.

For the most part they are all too cartoonish. Simpler is better and more appealing to the eye when photographing in a baren desert. That said, I'd have to go with 36.

I voted for the schemes that were closer to the SD7s orginal scheme.  Too many of them seemed overly busy.

With the headlights and ditchlights on full brightness, how can any nose of any locomotive have a real visibility problem?  Even in broad daylight they're hard to miss.
