3 Westbounders in De Beque Canyon
Author: SP8595

De Beque Canyon is located East of Grand Jct. CO where the tracks and Interstate 70 follow alongside the Colorado River.
After trying to shoot that Canadian National engine on my last two outings, I thought I'd try for the other Canadian railroad today:}

1) I hiked up to a location on the opposite side of the River at Tunnel Siding but the Sun angle wasn't what I had planned on and the next curve was quite a distance away so I turned around and was heading back to the car when I heard the Westbound Rocky Mountaineer approaching.
Unfortunately their own GP40's were missing on today's run and instead the power was a pair of borrowed Union Pacific SD70m's, the 4927 and 3880.

2) A going away view with the 10 car train about to head into 763 ft. Beaver Tail Tunnel.

3) Next was Union Pacific's Denver to Grand Jct. manifest train with SD70ACe #8592 leading the 106 car train that was running 3X1. This location is a little further to the East with the train approaching Tunnel Siding.

4) Not the angle I had planned on but you can see the shadow from a cloud that was rapidly approaching the train so a quick grab shot in the last place that had any sunshine hitting the tracks.

5) Luckily a slow order delayed the train long enough so that I was able to get ahead of it and shoot it once more approaching Palisade in the Sun! Canadian Pacific ES44AC #8774 and AC44CW #8506 along with BNSF 6199 are the power for this empty BNSF Oil train that is heading to Wellington, UT from Kansas City.

A much shorter day, only 2 hours and Go Canada:}

Great images from another productive outing! Some odd looking number boards on 8774 there, too.

Excellent series, certainly shows a different angle of that canyon than the view from the highway or Amtrak...

Very nice series of photos.

These photos will be great reference for my D&RGW layout scenery.  Sure do miss the Rio Grande through there.

Wow series.  Like 'em all but especially like the frame in #5.  Only 3 numbers off on the ACe
