Suspense on Quint Street in San Francisco
Author: phthithu

Here's the San Francisco local as heard and then seen from the curve on Quint St. This was via one of those completely lucky driving past the dirt yard at noon catches. After this failed to catch them going up the ramp got stuck at that red light at Phelps Ave.and Evans by the gas station. The way to do it is to get to Evans via Quint St. even if you have to drive out to 3rd St.and then drive up Davidson then turn onto Evans toward third and right turn onto Phelps.

There's a big encampment up at Oakdale along the tracks and new fencing going in.

I started circumnavigating all the closed streets such as Quint St. and the road underneath 280 and found the tracks at Rankin and Newcomb along with the bumper still there.

If everyone would open their San Francisco SPIN books to page 7 or something you'll see the shipper at Newcomb and Rankin was Jack Horner Pie. Now I bet everyone is hungry. But now that warehouse is owned by the San Francisco sewer agency.

I drove down Newcomb and tacked onto Toland looking for tracks and there are some here and there still. Passed a sandwich place which is supposed to have an incredible breakfast burrito. Too late for a burrito had the pastrami melt. The SP's 300 zone lead passed the sandwich place on its way to the pie shipper. There was a Renon Bakeries across the street from the sandwich place that took cars. Probably smelled pretty great.

Nice Video .  Industrial street running in big cities is just about all gone these days.   what little street running thats left seems to be in smaller/rural cities.

By the sounds of it (and map!) I believe you have discovered The Deli Lama.

Good sandwiches. Longtime favorite lunch spot of mine.

Great look at a barely seen or thought about area. You said about the bumper I thought you meant the Jeep. Thanks for posting.

Thx for the map.  Just wondering if its possible to highlight the tracks that are still active.

On the map those tracks--the entire zone--on the compass west side of the SP mainlines are all long abandoned. Erstwhile TO user FJC recounted that there was a reefer customer down there that was taking cars into around 2001 I think. Then there was some sort of work done on the Calttrain main that might have impacted the lead--I think maybe used as a laydown yard--and taken it out of service for a while and then it was never used again. I wish I could remember the deets. 14th Avenue lead I believe it was called.

The customer taking the reefers did indeed come right off the CALTRAIN main, and then crossed 3rd street way down south in the Bayview.  In fact, they installed a signal there, too, like up at the other diamond crossing near the Port of SF.  So the MUNI trolley, until recently, had 2 diamonds to cross of active rail lines, both signal protected.  The customer was PCP, I believe--Pacific Coast Products, but I may be confusing that same with the reefer customer that existed in SSF.

Either way, as a truck drive in that area, I'd get to watch the switch action every now and then.  I usually saw anywhere from 2-5 reefers spotted at one time.

Coach the one I was referring to in my post--if that's the post you are referring to above--was off the eastbound main right across from the Quint St. switch. 14th Ave. lead went into the produce market area. The one you are talking about is the Coke lead which ran down Carroll Ave. I don't think it's out of service yet but the shipper no longer uses rail.
