How's 'bout a Cumbre Sampler...

Note the sign in Photo 1:  Cumbre Loops Ahead!   (I sould think they'd have remembered this part- you know, not really needing a sign)

Dang, that is truly railroading on Mars!

And narrow gauge at a place called Cumbre, no less.

Excellent series. Your first photo was a good pick to start your post.

All that track and not a single railroad tie in sight.   Quite a railroad.

Thanks for the excellent photos.

What a desolate place and yeah what Milwaukee said about no ties! Like the world and ballast are but one and the same.

Any plans to visit the FCAS line during your trip? The area around the mines at Escondida and Zaldivar looks like it could be interesting to shoot, though it might be inaccessible due to it being on secured mining lands. It also looks like there are far more customers on the FCAB line heading towards Bolivia.

Ties and ballast are purposely buried to protect the wooden ties from the baking sun.

I considered it in the planning process, but in fine tuning my calendar I passed on it for extra time on Cumbre and making the full trip to the Bolivian border- twice.
