“Train on fire at Goffs”
Author: DRGW5502

Heard the Needles dispatcher say this on the radio last night about midnight local time. Currently Needles is a parking lot and #3 has been sitting at the depot for 3 hours. Anyone on here have any insight on what’s going out there?

From the Needles web cam chat I read 3 rail cars and a bridge are burning just west of Amboy near mile post 666.  I have no idea how accurate this is but the chat also said that train 3 passengers will be bussed from Needle to LA.

Fire in a container or trailer on eastbound intermodal train Q-LACALT3-26, stopped between West Amboy and East Siberia.   Amtrak 3 made it to Goffs, then reversed back to Needles.

Sounds like they believe lithium batteries from a load of power tools caused it.

Lithium battery fires are no picnic.  Hopefully the container was carrying power tools and wasn't just full of lithium batteries.  We've had 2 major accidents the last two months here in Nevada involving tractor trailer trucks transporting these batteries.  The incident in July closed the I-15 for 44 hours!

I imagine westbounds are backed up as far as Winslow by now.  It will be a photo field day when things reopen.
Thanks for the news and keep us up to date.

We had a big rig near the Port of LA. That was transporting Lithium batteries.
And it had flipped on to it side. And the Lithium batteries exploded.

Thanks for showing all the stopped trains.  Any updates on the situation?  BNSF site still says track should open at 11 pm CDT.

Bridges at MP 668.8 both total loss due to fire.  Temporary culverts and fill to get track open.  Main 2 just opened approx. 18:30 and starting to move eastbounds.

New plant in Weirton, WV is making batteries now. Hope the iron-air is a little more stable. We just bought another big deep-cycle lithium for the solar panels and it's got me kind of nervous.

Good deal for Weirton. Those folks need more good jobs.

Iron air battery technology has a lot of potential for power storage for power stations, homes, factories, schools, etc. Places where weight is a lower concern.
