Forget Amtrak, I'm Chasing This Train Instead
Author: walstib

After spending the past week attending the Southern Pacific Historical & Technical Society annual gala in Sparks, I was ready to do some foaming today.

I chased Amtrak 5 over the hill to Colfax, and was headed to Newcastle when someting caught my eye — two pair of spreaders headed from Roseville to Truckee, for the season.

So, I ditched Amtrak, and turned around to chase the spreaders up the hill. I caught them at Colfax, Dutch Flat, and Soda Springs. I ran video at the last two locations.

Here's a video with two clips. Dutch Flat, followed by Soda Springs.

It seems to play fine with crappy hotel wi-fi in Davis.

Regardless, here's a still of what the train looked like.

His video's resolution is 3840 x 2160, so it's "2K". But it's 30 fps instead of 60 fps, so in most cases it should play OK.

TO's video player might resize (smaller) to fit the browser, but it doesn't reduce the actual bandwidth to the lower displayed resolution, hence the choppy playback. It might be more than just the network bandwidth - whatever device you're using to view the video might have slow CPU that can't catch up on video decoding. It plays good on my 13 year old Mac.

I've recommended posting videos at 720p to others (1280 x 720) in the past and I post mine to match the displayed size (480p or DVD quality) and have my video editor reprocess to the lower resolution before posting.
