Fall color, no Heritage

I got an interesting text message that two of Uncle Pete’s heritage units, the 1983 & the 1943 would be on a westbound train heading down the GSR to Herington this afternoon. Having just seen some fall colors a couple of days ago I decide to go for another excursion on the GSR. I spotted, chased & caught an eastbound intermodal when it stopped on the main at Maple Hill. Then ‘things’ went astray...

1. UP 2570 sits with an eastbound train short of the Willard Rd crossing in Maple Hill, KS.

2. UP 2570 again, at 140mm.

Coulda ~ shoulda ~ woulda: Thinking a westbound train was on the way I move east just a bit.

3. I found some more fall color. All I needed was for the WB train to arrive so the 2570 could roll right past this spot on its eastbound departure. After over 90” I suspected something unusual was up. I called another friend down in Herington who confirmed there was some kind of sudden M.O.W. thing going on between here & Topeka. So I had a reluctant decision to make...

With a must-see football game to see at 7 PM (GO Cats!) I decided to give it up and head back to Manhattan. I’ve shot both the 1983 & 1943 plenty of times in the past, and I’m sure I’ll have more opportunities in the future. But on the way home I stopped at the crossing and...

4. ...shot one more sequence. Fall color looks good back-lit, too! Catch ya next time...
