At the Edge of Mt. Shasta
Author: billmeeker

Union Pacific 8676 South crosses an ancient lava flow as it descends the grade between Andesite and Hotlum near Mt. Shasta CA on 10/24/24.  In about an hour the train will be in Dunsmuir for a crew change.

Wow, quite an impressive view, thanks. First shot really shows the grade that continues to climb on up to Grass Lake from the Black Butte 'sag.' I'm still fascinated all these years later how Grass Lake summit actually outdoes Cascade Summit by a few feet.

Another fascinating area, one of my first trips to the area we travelled the MoW trail from Andesite to Hotlum. Lots of white knuckle areas.

Some of the existing Forest Service roads in the area are old Long-Bell Lumber rail branches. Very surprising where the trees were back in the day and how far the rails went up into the hills. Of course not many trees grow in the lava flows, but there are some.

That really gets me, too, because Grass Lake doesn't seem that "high", due to the terrain.  It's also like Black Butte Summit on I-5 almost being as high as Siskiyou Pass on I-5 not far down the road.  Siskiyou Pass seems so much higher due to the mountain climb, but it's not.  That messes with my head!

Awesome angle! We drove out to this area just to scout it out and see the Hotlum Trestle, pretty spectacular!

Cool shots - thanks for posting.

In the last photo, it looks like there is a line of cement ties in front of the train - is UP installing a new siding at that location?

The present owners have been doing huge amounts of trackwork this season including trading concrete for wood ties in selected areas, not all areas.

+ we're also seeing signs of removing concrete and installing new wood ties. There's stories about the big train lengths and weights doing damage to the track 'structure', including blowing out the curves. Lots of curve re-alignment all year long, lots of rail detector cars too.

Several corners are getting the concrete tie treatment.
