On the road again . . .
Author: 3rdswitch

.   .   .   decided the other day that since the weather in AZ was going to be nice, why not take a few days and head down there and try to finish what I started with McMoran in Morenci, AZ, before the injury, soooo yesterday on the way down saw a westbound in the siding at Duran, NM, so headed to first crossing to catch the eastbound he was waiting for (top) then waited for the westbound to get to the crossing (middle) after which I proceeded to follow the BNSF Clovis Sub west to Belen catching one of only three eastbounds on the Sub (bottom) east of Encino as compared to twelve westbounds!             .    .     .     nine more   .   .   .

.   .   .   another eastbound at Willard (top) then barely caught up to this lengthy baretable at Abo (middle) then caught a westbound departing Belen (bottom) .   .   .
.   .   .   six more   .   .   .

.   .   .   went to Lordsburg, NM, for the night with a slight detour through the old Santa Fe copper concentrate lines, now Southwestern RR, at Hurley and Silver City. At Hurley SW now uses a very good condition looking former Santa Fe GP30 (top) as well as a pair of former BNSF SD40-2s. After arriving Lordsburg a monster UP eastbound was blasting through town and shortly after a westbound monster 4x3x0 came catching him just west of Lordsburg (middle), the eastbound before this train as well as photo number one were the fastest moving UP trains I have ever seen, and when I returned to the east end of town a pleasant surprise was Amtrak train number one arriving (bottom). Apparently Lordsburg is a flagstop? as the train slowly came to a controlled stop at a clear signal with no one getting on or off and immediately whistled off departing only seconds after stopping? Tomorrow we will see what happens in Morenci.

Nice bunch, been several years since I've been to Hurley and Silver City. And that westward view near Encino is always a good bet, the landscape and sky seem to go on forever...

Wow, it's hard to believe there are a few GP30 "shells" still running around in revenue service...

As usual, very nice shots Joe. In those two shots of the JB Hunt stack train approaching Dalies, I've stood, if not in the same spot, very close to it. Happy hunting as your trip progresses.

That's NOT a GP30 shell, it's a real live ex-AT&SF GP30u complete with it's 16-567D3 engine.

Good stuff and nice catch with Amtrak.  Even though they all look the same I still like seeing them.
