Very Rare Locomotive visits Eastern Oregon
Author: funnelfan

Yesterday a very exotic visitor layed over near the Love's Truck Stop in Ontario, OR. White Pass & Yukon Railway #114 was bought by the Cumbres & Toltec Rwy last year and is now in the midst of it's long journey to Colorado. The ALCO designed DL-535E locomotive was one of four ordered by the WP&Y in 1980 from Bombardier. But when mining traffic tanked due the recession, the four languished in Quebec, Canada. US Gypsum Railway near the Salton Sea in California ended up purchasing three of the locomotives with the fourth finally going to the WP&Y in 1994. Displaced by modern power in recent years, #114 became surplus and was sold off.

Serious heavy rig! The rig's green clashes awfully with the WP&Y green!

I've never thought about railfanning at Love's Truck Stops.  :^)    That is quite the catch!

In 1981 I was taken to task by the WP&YR General Manager for calling it the White Pass & Yukon "Railway." It is White Pass & Yukon "Route"...the railway actually had three corporate names for Alaska, BC and the Yukon. Passenger cars were owned by the USA company which was the Pacific & Arctic Railway & Navigation Co., and sublettered "P&AR&N Co." on the ends of the letterboards. Wonder if that's still the case?

Doesn't the Cumbres and Toltec already have 1 of these, or is it the Durango and Silverton??

Must be looking at some steep grades since it appears that they have a pusher truck hooked up to the rear of the trailer.

You don't think about Loves and railfanning? Half the Lathrop Z's stop at the Loves in Tehachapi to have
their doors closed. And as to the 114, yay, get rid of those dirty old steam locomotives!! Just kidding, it's
going into work train and emergency service.

As WP&Y #114 speeds down the interstate, will that be the fastest #114 has ever travelled?  With a pusher truck to get it up to speed.

Durango & Silverton has a couple - or more - of the older model units.

Correct, Durango & Siilverton has four of the older DL535 model, we saw one on I-15 in Utah a few years ago on its journey to Colorado.  This is a DL535E, I should start checking the nearby truckstops to see if it comes this way through Utah.
