Western Railroad Discussion > Eastern Colorado Recovers from Epic Snowstorm Nov 2024

Eastern and southeastern Colorado transportation was recovering from three day (5, 6, and 7 November 2024) heavy, wet snowstorm that brought ALL transportation to a stop.  Denver International Airport received 19.2-inches of heavy, wet snow that canceled and delayed hundreds of flights mainly on 8 and 9 November.

Union Pacific had to resort to deadheading train crews by train on the UP's Limon Subdivision since Interstate 70 was closed at Airpark Road in Aurora, CO, to the Kansas State Line or Burlington, CO, at different times.  Train crews were moved to Sharon Springs, KS.

Photos show the 28-inch deep wet snow that covered UP tracks at Agate, Colorado, on Sunday, 10 November 2024.

Kyle RR hy-rail truck was buried in heavy wet snowfall east of Limon, Colorado, along the former Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific RR line.  Truck was still stuck on Sunday, 10 November 2024.  Video didn't load properly.

Photos - Kyle RR 6843 West with Utah Railway 5006 was stopped west of Burlington, CO, as of Thursday, 8 November 2024, waiting for epic eastern Colorado snowstorm to clear.  Conoco gas station suffered gas pump roof collapse at Stratton, CO.

Union Pacific's Limon Subdivision was quiet - no trains Sunday, 10 November 2024.  Limon, CO, UP and former Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific RR line looking west towards Colorado Springs, CO, (diamond has been removed) near the Limon Railroad Museum in the former depot.

The Rock Island's Rocky Mountain Rocket passenger service was discontinued in October 1966.

Rabbit checked out Limon Police car buried in heavy wet snow at Limon, CO, 10 Nov 2024.

Historic snowfalls across multiple counties over a 96-hour period ending Thursday, 7 Nov 2024.  Some towns, such as Parker in Douglas County and Ponderosa Park in Elbert County, saw snowfall totals exceeding 40 inches.  

According to the National Weather Service Denver/Boulder, the snowfall began on November 5 and continued through November 9. Ponderosa Park recorded the highest accumulation at 41.5 inches, followed closely by Limon with 35.5 inches and Foxfield with 30.6 inches.

1 - Kyle RR had new ties at Arriba, Colorado, buried in snow from the epic 3-day snowstorm that occurred 7-9 November 2024.

2 - Electrify America charging station at Flagler, Colorado, are seldom used and were unplowed for potential electric car users on Sunday, 10 November 2024.

3 - Not everybody slowed down for the wintry conditions-!  Westbound pickup truck was driving too fast, left the two lane highway and collided with a utility pole west of Burlington, Colorado.  Railroad track is next to this highway.
