Western Railroad Discussion > Oakland TonightDate: 11/26/24 00:57 Oakland Tonight Author: phthithu Paid a visit to the Port of Oakland and caught the chicken job working Schnitzer Steel. On the yard channel got word that a work train with a San Luis crew was due in 25 minutes. Just barely caught them but flubbed the focus as they came up the square.Got this going away shot of the tank car on the back of the train.

You can climb up on the hand railing and shot through a gap at the top or just shoot through the mesh depending on your setup. No one's cut a hole in the mesh there like they have elsewhere. Or maybe it just gets fixed? Date: 11/26/24 21:39 Re: Oakland Tonight Author: Bowknot In the SP days, the West Oakland yardmaster would sometimes refer to a track called "Chicken Charlie." I wonder if that place is related to the "Chicken Job" nicely photographed here.

It's just regular-sized chain link, small enough to keep people from throwing large objects onto the people and traffic below, but big enough that a cell phone camera or a small lens can fit through easily. Back in the film days, I shot through it with a Pentax K1000 fitted with the stock 50mm lens with no problem: Date: 11/28/24 00:34 Re: Oakland Tonight Author: phthithu Bowknot Wrote:

Bowknot, That issue came up recently in a thread about an upcoming realignment of the 7th St. automobile underpasses of the UP. I believe research on TO led to use deciding that Chicken Charlie was the reefer transload warehouse located at Bay St. just north of 7th St. This warehouse was only just recently torn down in advance of that 7th St. relignment project. Here's the detailed thread: https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?1,5929922,5930286#msg-5930286 Date: 11/28/24 22:53 Re: Oakland Tonight Author: AlcoRSD15 It’s nice to see you’re out again taking night photos. I’m looking forward to seeing more. - Eric B

I was thinking about your thread on this job from a year or so ago the other day. It's a neat addition to railfanning Oakland at a very reasonable hour and this time of year seems to offer some great opportunities for practicing the night shot technique.
