Roadrailers over the Old Man
Author: highgreengraphics

Photo 1 : With the former roadrailer schedules between Kansas City and Detroit, the old Wabash Mississippi River lift bridge at Hannibal, MO was always problematic for pictures with the eastbound being very early and the westbound being very late. Photo 1: Very late in the afternoon of August 18, 2024 the 255 NS Triple Crown Roadrailer of the day rolls over Old Man River led by NS 4311.  Photo 2 : The 255 Roadrailer was running a bit earlier in the afternoon of August 20, 2024 as 7706 leads it across the bridge in different lighting, with the sun of course always setting opposite the accessible side in the afternoon for 255, making more of a photo challenge. Happy river railfanning! === === = === JLH

Wow, great catch with the NS Roadrailers on the Mississippi River Bridge.  I've seldom seen that huge bridge.

I wonder   How much does that section sag with the passing train?

I am sure it's necessarily springy....slightly....

If we're going to test for sag, let's get a unit coil steel train on the bridge in those short coil steel cars, really concentrate the weight!  Or iron ore pellets in short ore jennies!

In 1987, 50th anniversary, the Golden Gate Bridge was closed to traffic and pedestrains filled it to celebrate.  After an estimated 250,000 surged across the span, bridge engineers closed the span to turn away another 500,000 because the normal arch had flattened.  That could be an exaggeration on the number of people, but I saw the bridge flatten from Point Bonita!  That was the heaviest load the GG Bridge has ever seen.

My caption is wrong - This bridge replaced an older swing span that was built by the Wabash Railroad, it also doubled as an automobile toll bridge. This lift bridge portion came from the Southern Railway on a portion of track abandoned between Florence and Sheffield, AL. It also replaced an older swing bridge there in 1962. The remaining approaches are a pedestrian walkway "bridge to nowhere".This lift bridge portion was removed and shipped to Hannibal in pieces and reassembled in 1993 as shown here ! === === = === JLH
