ALCO selector positions
Author: ALCOMOTIVE

I’m having a bit of trouble understanding the exact function of the selector on ALCO locomotives equipped with non-supervisory automatic transitions. I understand that on most(if not all) models after the RSD-12, the first motoring position is used to set up automatic transitions if all locomotives in the consist are equipped to do so. What I don’t understand is how exactly the other three motoring positions effect transitions. Do they each correspond to a specific transition? Do they effect the lead unit? Any help would be much appreciated.

The operating manual also specifies different selector positions for MUing with locomotives equipped for “supervisory automatic transitions) and “manual transitions”. What exactly is the difference there?

The Alcodoc (Don Colangelo of D-L renown) on FB would probably love to chat with you.
