Otis, my man!
Author: swaool

Whenever I hear the name "Otis" I think of the band "Otis Day and the Knights" from the 1978 film "Animal House".  CP Otis, on UP's former C&NW Clinton Sub, is just east of Cedar Rapids (IA) where the "passenger main" to the downtown depot diverted from the main line.  The lines came back together at "Beverly" on the west side of town - Marty Bernard has posted many Bill Kuba shots of C&NW trains at Beverly.  Here, we see an eastbound coal train at Otis on New Years Day 2025, Jeff Van Cleve photo, my collection.

My, oh my... you guys are slaying me with my own memories. Animal House is also one of my favorites! And it is directly involved with the first work train I ever caught, back in 1978. You'd better check this out: ( How a flagging job turned into a Toga Party! ).

And you can visit the 'Dexter Lake Club' (where those scenes are set - near the University of Oregon in Eugene) while doing some railfanning of the former SP mainline that passes through the small unincorporated community of Dexter, OR.

Brings to mind 'Willie and the Hand Jive',  written by Johnny Otis.  Danced to it at El Monte Legion Stadium late 50s.  Had to be careful who you asked to dance out there but what great times.

Looks like we have quite a few honorary members of Delta Tau Chi here.  I looked up Dexter Lake Club; it's a real place and it's still in business.  "Now drop and give me twenty!"

Regarding Johnny Otis, I visited with him back in 1957 when he did a DJ show from a record shop in Long Beach.  Since I came from Monrovia vis CA Highway 19, I did not go west of the 1200 block of East Pacific Coast Highway.  Had I gone a few miles further west, I might have seen Pacific Electric cars on Long Beach Blvd. and thus found that they were still running, even though they had disappeared from Monrovia five years earlier.  "O saddest words of tongue or pen, It might have been."
