Chicago Heights IL (UP, CN, IC and CSX) - 10-Jan-2025
Author: johnusnsd

In Chicago on business (actually east of Chicago - in Merriville IN) - and had about 1hr to spare today - and ventured out in the sloppy snowy weather to Chicago Heights diamond.    I have never visited this location, and was impressed with the traffic - 4 in less than 1 hour.    Now, not the most scenic locale to railfan - but if you are just seeking trains, this location won't disappoint.

The snow presented a bit of a challenge and I did not have my camera rig with me - but still enjoyed the short visit.

Thanks for sharing these. Was quite busy (40-50 tpd) when I worked in that area in the 1990s. SOO Line still operated on that line in addition to CSX and UP. Everything ran 251 back then so northbound were slow as each destination slowly took their trains. Plus UP's auto ramp and industrial switching zone provided interesting scenes.

That is some excellent railfanning there.  I especially like the collection of notable locomotives from CN's stable in photo #3, including the ex-Gulf Mobile and Ohio GP38-2 third out (IC 9568, ex GM&O 748).  I looked at the Griifith camera footage today to see if your CSX duo passed through and they did at 1:46.  Had you been able to be in Chicago Heights around 4:30 or so, I think you may have caught shiny new SD75IACC's 8327 and 8326 passing through westbound on probably their first revenue trip.  Those two, as well as 8328 and 8317 that went east towards South Bend this morning, were four of the units caught on the Elkhart cam a couple of mornings ago: https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?2,5966986

CSXT 3404 and 5373, along with CSXT 5253, headed out of Kirk Yard with Waterloo-bound freight M337 this morning (Jan. 11); they passed the Griffith railcam at 07:59 CST, the Flossmoor cam at 08:46 and Railstream's Mt. Carmel cam at 11:13.
