UP Boone Sub at Ogden IA 2 2 25
Author: MILW86A

Sunday my friend Dana and I went up to Ogden IA on the UPRR Boone Sub. I tagged along as he was trying his new camera he had just bought on Saturday,
First train was this 178 car MPRNP. Like a mortgage lifter on the old CGW.

Next was hotshot ZLCG2. This is the newest train across here. Its mostly stacks but there were a couple of pigs in the train. And he was hauling the mail.

Next we get ZSCG2
Then Westbound 2IG4SE with alomost 10k feet of train. Im curious how this train gets routed across Chicago.

Next is the Auto Train, AMICX on track 2. It skunked me on the next Z train ZBRG2 as you can see in the 3rd photo. Oh well.....

I think I recall reading that the IM trains running the Overland gain Global 4 with a Proviso-IHB-Argo-CN ex-GM&O routing.

Since these shots are west of Nevada, IA can I assume the ZLCG2 gains the Overland from KC by routing KC-Council Bluffs via the Falls City sub?

Nice bunch of catches.  Looks like a lot of heavy tonage trains, and really cool to get the NS units.

Your comment made me smile. I first heard that phrase from my grandfather who would check the North Coast Limited's time on his watch when it came through. Younger folks today aren't exposed to mail trains or RPO schedules to understand "packin' the mail." That and "mortgage lifter" hint at life experiences we can only try to share with younger generations through stories. Keep on sharing the old idioms. They tell wonderful stories!

I believe the EB comes up the Falls City and the WB G2LC makes the turn at Nevada and goes south on the Mason City and Trenton.
Ill stand corrected if not.

You are correct. UP uses directional traffic on both routes. The line south of Nevada, thru Des Moines to KC is normally southbound traffic. Northbound traffic comes up the Falls City line.

How does Sioux City-Worthington-Mankato enter into directional running KC<->St Paul (or North Platte<->St Paul) now.

I got a sense from Twin Cities railfans that the Sioux City route is not used directionally anymore, but some Spine Line traffic diverts to/from it using the Mason City-St James line. This implies that Spine Line north of Nevada isn't strictly directional now either...

The Short Line north of Nevada was never purely directional. There are a some southbound manifests that go via St. James then over to Mason City.

The Cal Jct to Sioux City and beyond segment sees trains in both directions.
