Back on May 5, 2012  there was going to be a "Super Moon" rising at dusk right over the east end of Abo Canyon.  Of course, shooting a moonrise is always a crap shoot...you take what you can get....if anything.  The category of these pictures is in the "if anything" category.

1. BNSF 5035 West,  S NWOSCO1 03C , is coming through Sais, NM with the signals at east Sais in full view.    The moon is just coming over the horizon.

2. A bit further west, the train is making more progress than the moon.  And, it is getting darker.

3. This would have been an ideal time for the train to show up...but like I said trains and moon rises are a real crap shoot!

You definitely get an "A" for effort even if it didn't work to perfection. In any case that is a very good series of photos. Besides, few others would have even tried such a photo (I can say I wouldn't have).

John, I know from previous PM conversations you and I have had how much preliminary research and preparation you put into a photographic event like this. It’s not your fault the damn train showed up 2-3 minutes early. You did your job absolutely correctly! Kudos…

I'll second that!  Having the Moon fully visible
might almost look staged - which incidentally,
you could probably do with a double exposure /
layer adjustment (just say you did!).

Congrats on a well earned IOTD - I meant to
comment earlier but could not figure out how
to share some I-Phone shots - I felt your pain,
as Amtrak rarely plays nice with timely sunset
appearances - EVEN when scheduled!  And
it's literally the difference of a couple of minutes
regarding what side of the tracks you need to
be on!  Now add all those haphazardly placed
catenary poles, lol - good times!
