What Would You Do For a Klondike Bar (shot)?
Author: slug96

Late spring days on the Needles Sub are just warm enough to enjoy a Klondike Bar. Especially at Klondike. For years, I've been wanting to go and photograph trains climbing the grade at Klondike. The tight curves and vast, empty landscape of the eastern Mojave Desert is just fascinating to me. From this over look, it was a sight to see these trains battle the 1.4% grade.

1- BNSF 4227 on a S-ALTSCO3.
2- BNSF 7699 on the Q-CHISTO
3- BNSF 5356 on the S-MEMLBT3. It was nice to catch a Dash 9 leader as it seems to be rarer to catch one leading,

After Klondike, we moved east towards Bagdad. There, clouds rolled, blocking the sun and cool down the hot day we were experiencing. Even got a little bit of rain. Fortunately, the sun did poke through the clouds when a train was approaching.

4- BNSF 8507, a SD70ACe, leads the Z-AUGSBD8
5- BNSF 6832 leads a hot Z-WSPSBD1.
6- BNSF 7692 brings the Z-SBDCHI8 down the grade of Ash Hill at sunset.

Thanks for looking!

Great series! Is the drive/walk into that spot at Klondike relatively easy?

I have a question for the signal system on line from Barstow to Needles, CA..

Do the signals be constantly lit or are they approach lit for a train in the block??

It's been about 16-17 years since I've been there to film.  The drive to the base of the mountain was relatively easy, but the walk/short hike up the hillside to gain some elevation for this angle was a bit challenging.  Attached is a shot of my hillside perch.

I believe they are approach lit. From what I saw both on the Needles and Seligman Sub they stay off until a train enters the block. Signal could be on for less than 5 minutes before a train passes and as long as an hour in areas where trains climb up grade (moreso in central and eastern Arizona).

I found it to be pretty straightforward. I parked down at the signals at Siberia, then hiked up the approx mile to mile and a half, but you could drive closer with a suitable vehicle. Depending on time of day and year it can obviously be pretty warm so some water etc is probably a good idea. Lighting for photos/videos is generally best quite early in the morning. The climb up the final hill to the overlook took me 10-15 minutes or so. Great view obviously!

Years ago I drove in and parked behind the fill in the photo so my Toyota Corolla wouldn't be in our photos.  It was very sandy and a lot of fishtailing but I had a shovel and a pusher (another guy), didn't need either.
