Trivia Time
Author: boomer

In a twist on the usual railroad trivia, I thought I would bring up some questions in regards to some of TO's very own members...so see how many of these you can answer...you will notice that most of these are fairly simple questions...:>} I'm going easy on you folks this time out!

1> Where does the nickname "Bradleymckay" come from (railroad terminology)?

2> What area of the country does Cdub hail from? How about AaronJ? Hint: both live in the heartland of the country.

3> What is Photobob's favorite railroad?

4> Who was the former "Mayor of Cajon?"

5> Name a famous TO photographer who lives in Exeter, CA.?

6> Photographer Brett Wirick (who posts his shots on here from time to time) likes to film around what area?

7> What is Waybill's famous slogan regarding railfans and railfanning?

8> What was the unit number of Espeeboy's favorite ex-SP unit? Hint: a product from GE.

9> Can anybody remember who first coined the phrase "techno-toasters," and in regards to locomotives from what year?

10> Whatever became of Mark Wayman, who used to do all of those great Vegas area photos for PRN/CTC Board back in the '80s?

See, I told you this was an easy one!

One bonus question: TrainJunky lives in a spot that most of us would love to be at - can anybody name the area?

This is gonna be interesting to hear as I can remember folks call GE's this years ago. Granted, when most of us heard GE's for the first time we thought more of washing machines as when they worked hard they sounded like they were sloshing inside. But about the time the c30's et. al. came on the scene is when I remember folks starting with thw tecno toaster names.

Two sidings. Bradley and McKay. Well, three, if you consider there's actually McKay #1 and McKay #2.

Of course, my all-time favorite "handle" has gotta be "B. O. Wawe". Maybe Boomer will give you extra credit if you can deciphir what it means.

"B. O. Wawe"

Got to be Beowawe, Nevada, just west of Palisade Canyon on the SP and WP

No comment, but I'm flattered that I'm part of a Boomer quiz!

The SP

Burlington John? I think this would be the TO answer, but traditionally, isn't it Chard Walker

Don Bowen

It's that same town where that Robert Uhric TV action drama was based in the late 70's, many years before he did "Spencer For Hire". No, I'm not talking about Boston!

> 7> What is Waybill's famous slogan regarding

"Railfanning Is Serious Business"

"Techno-toasters" first came about around 87' when the production line of Dash 8's began. I think Jim Boyd was the one who came up with this term.

I've always wondered about what happenned to him too. Three of my theories is that he died, he just became too busy with other things in life (family, job, religious cult, etc.) that he didn't have time to shoot trains anymore, or he moved to a place that doesn't hardly have any trains to shoot, like Hawaii.

Alright, I was waiting for someone to answer the "Waybill" part of the quiz - good going! You should all know that famous saying by now! I think everything was answered in full, so I'll have to toughen things up next time. Good job!

Not to worry, Cdub, I'll try and have a personal trivia quiz just for you one of these days. By the way - did we ever figure out what the answer was the to that Omaha/Council Bluffs quiz about how many railroads served that area in the sixties?

Beowawe: I believe it's an old indian name, but will check on it. They say in the history books that the Beowawe area once rivaled Yellowstone Park area for geothermal potential, but that was squashed when the geothermal power plant was put in west of that area back in the fifties. You still see a few little steamers/hot springs out there from time to time.

Boomer,

I'm still curious about what happenned to Mark Wayman. He was a good shooter. Regarding the railroads of Omaha/CB in the 1960's, it was UP, CNW, GGW, RI, MP, SOT (South Omaha Terminal), Wabash/NW, IC, MILW, & CB&Q.

Two things that can kill railfanning for anybody: BNSF Dash 9's and UP SD70Ms!!! I sure haven't picked up a camera much the last couple months, as I think the railfanning bug has at last passed through me since a bowel movement I had back in October.

Wow, sorry to hear Mark got out of the rr photo business; I still have quite a few old '80s CTC Board/PRN copies lying around, mainly because of some great photos he took down in the Vegas area. Thanks for the update on his whereabouts.

Hey Cdub, don't worry - the longing will return! You guys are just spoiled with all of those 100-car mainlines and coal trains out there...:^)

AaronJ...I knew that you knew...but wasn't sure that everyone else knew. You'd better watch yourself or I'll have to throw a 10-part intermodal quiz your way!
