SP's "modified Daylight" paint schemes
Author: bradleymckay

The threads below reminded me that SP had more than one type of this scheme (or so I think). SD40R 7342, SD45R 7399 and the
Sulzer engine powered TE70-4's 7030-33 all had a variation.
Does anybody remember the differences between them? Anybody know why SP decided to paint the "Sulzers" they way they did??

TIA

AM

The 7342 was mostly orange with the bloody nose.

The firemans side had red Southern Pacific lettering on the long hood and red 7342 on the cab. It had the bloody nose but not wings.

The engineers side had white lettering on the long hood and white numbers on the cab. The bloody nose had wings.

The red lettering/nubering was difficult to see on the orange and the numbers on the firemans side were replaced rather quickly with white numbers.

Also, when the 7342 was first released (first seen in Oakland on 12/18/80), it had a gray roof on one SIDE of the roof only! when you looked down the centerline of the cab, half of the roof was gray, and the other half (engineers side, I believe) was orange.

Of course, the 7342 was later painted into the daylight-like scheme later seen on the 7399. (red and orange arrranged horizontally down the hood, with gray roof.)

You can compare the original 7342 and the later 7399 paint with these two links:

SP7342 at Oakland, December 1980:

SP7399 at Jack London Square, April 1985:

And to compare the modified paint that 7342 received to match 7399, check out the two of them helping 4449 over Tehachapi in 1984:

7342, in the first "daylight" paint scheme, also had one half of the top of the short hood gray and the other half red. Curiously, the horns were orange on the inside and gray on the outside. My guess is that SP was trying to determine the wear-ability of different colors of paint on different areas of the engine.

It was later painted with wide red stripes on the sides to match SD 45 7399, and much later into standard red and gray.
