There's a post down the page from yesterday about BNSF putting some on the ground north of Kansas City. Nothing on the Omaha TV this morning about any derailments in this area.

I heard the Ds about 4pm yesterday saying they had a derailment at Ottumwa,Ia. Twelve cars of coal blocking mains 1 & 2. I would imagine they have one of those mains opened up by now.

There was an oops in Ottumwa yesterday with a WB coal train at the ICE diamond, seriously jamming up the operation account detours off the St Joe sub. Quite a mess, Amtrak 5 was turned back at Galesburg for Chi and annulled apparently.

Have started a thread about that on the Amtrak board.

In listening to the scanner here this morning and not hearing any trains Wed. evening or over night, I've heard it was an eastbound coal load on Main 2 that derailed just east of the IC & E diamond on the west side of downtown Ottumwa.

Freight train derailment delays Amtrak service

OTTUMWA, Iowa (AP) - Amtrak was calling out the buses Wednesday after a freight train derailment here blocked the tracks that serve the California Zephyr in a tangle of rail cars and dumped coal.

No one was injured in the derailment Wednesday afternoon.

"An eastbound train carrying coal jumped the track and several cars overturned, some collided," police Lt. Mike McDonough told WHO Radio in Des Moines. Two or three parked cars near the tracks also were damaged.

The Zephyr carries passengers between Chicago and San Francisco with a stop in Omaha.

Eastbound passengers were to stop Wednesday night in Denver, where they would be given the chance to stay or take buses to their eastbound destinations, said Mark Magliari, a Chicago-based spokesman for Amtrak.

Westbound passengers would stop in Galesburg, Ill., where buses would take passenger to their destinations as far as Denver. Passengers would be able to reboard the train there, Magliari said.

Amtrak was hoping for an update on repair plans from Burlington Northern Santa Fe, which owns the line, he said. A telephone message left Wednesday evening for BNSF was not immediately returned.

McDonough said the cause of the derailment, which involved 14 railcars, was not yet clear.
