Royal Gorge rr running from Pueblo? 3985 breakin run??
Author: dan

CH 7 news today said, due to lease impasse for the depot, they may run from Pueblo instead. I would think Canon City should wise up to them being bypassed for cash sakes. Don't know how they would structure this. First and last trips, all trips to Pueblo, well lets get them running to Dotsero for a connection with 5&6. I love them running from Pueblo personnally. To fine of a depot to not have service since 71. Nathan found this,http://www.canoncitydailyrecord.com/Local/Railroad%20mulls%20other%20offers%205-07-04.htm

They can't run out of Pueblo Union Depot. The connection to the UP (ex D&RGW) yard has long since been taken out. The BNSF connection is out of service also. A BNSF switch engine derailed bringing in Colorado & Wyoming GP7 104 and after the BNSF yardmaster found out was his switch and not the Pueblo Railway Foundation's he red flagged it.
The best idea would be to run out of Florence, about eight miles down the track from Canon City. Then they would get a couple of trips a day in.
The Florence depot is a senior citizens center but things can be worked out.
This isn't to say these trains won't run out of Pueblo in the future. There has been talk. The former D&RGW connection would be the best way out. It would have to cross the BNSF line, which has been built up since trains last crossed over it. Tracks are still in place at the depot just not across the BNSF main line so the train could enter and leave without disturbing the Pueblo Railway Foundation's collection. In fact it would be a welcome addition. It would need money and Uncle Pete'sd blessing.
BTW trains 1 & 2 the Royal Gorge took about an hour to run between Pueblo and Canon City with a stop in Florence. Speed limit was 70 mph. They couldn't do that now. Nos 1 and 2 last ran in July, 1967.

So, exactly what is the status of The Royal Gorge train? I was planing on a visit to Colorado this year and I surely don't want the extra mileage if it ain't runnin'.

There are two depots in Canon City. The Royal Gorge Route uses the former AT&SF depot while the Rio Grande depot is farther east. It is now a bank. Maybe something could be worked out. Same with the Florence Depot now senior Center.
I would still like to see trains out of Pueblo. Skirting the north side of Lake Pueblo, the Turkey Creek Trestle and the Gorge itself would be exciting.
