Tunnel motor lenghts?
Author: Cameraman

Are tunnel motors longer than their respective standard counterparts? or do they ride on the same frame?

I have been shooting some of the reborn T-motors and was wondering what their lenght was after seeing three take a train across the countryside.

So here is some fact wanted:

What is the lenght of the frame on each the standard SD-40, and the SD45?

What is the lenght of the 40-T2 and the 45-T2? if different.

Are any of these units as long or longer than the SDP type units that SP and EL had?

Was any unit longer such as the SD45X units?

Thanks for any help.

The SD38, SD39, SD40, SDP40 and SD45 all utilized the same frame. Early units had an overall length between the couplers of 65' 8" while late units were 65' 9 1/2" (due to the thicker pilot faces). The measurement between truck center axles and bolsters was 40' 0".

The SD38-2, SD40-2, SD45-2, SD40X (late KCS version) and SD50S all utilized the same frame. The overall length between the couplers was 68' 10", with 43' 6" between the bolsters. The measurement between the truck center axles was 43' 3".

The SD40A, SDP45, SD45X, SD40T-2 and SD45T-2 all utilized the same frame. The overall length between the couplers was 70' 8", with 45' 5" between the bolsters. The measurement between truck center axles was 45' 2".

The above all sounds plausible. Was it the DSG Update that got T-2 lengths wrong? Somebody did, anyway.

Was any EMD C-C longer? Well, the SDP40F was 72-4 over couplers. But the FP45 was 70-8, wasn't it?

Several sources over the years have incorrectly published the lengths of the SD40T-2 and SD45T-2 models as being the same as the SD38-2/SD40-2/SD45-2 models.

The overall length between couplers on the F45 is 67' 5 1/2", with a distance between truck center axles and bolsters of 41' 8".

The overall length for the FP45 and SDP40F is 72' 4" between the couplers, with a distance between truck center axles and bolsters of 45'.
