What is the Significance...
Author: ColoradoRailfan

...of this GP40-2 (UP 5245)??

On July 10, 2004, it was being used as the Colorado Springs switcher. Sitting in a very empty yard, the unit was turned off for the weekend near the depot. Coupled to the back of the switcher is Rio Grande caboose 01513. Unfortunately, the caboose has been badly tagged with graffiti, but the caboose is still used during the week when the Colorado Springs local runs around town!

Nathan-

Yeah, I'm thinking that may not be fair at this stage of the game....so, "no answer from you!"

Oh, for those of you not familiar with the territory, this is the yard in Colorado Springs on the Union Pacific Colorado Springs Subdivision/BNSF Pikes Peak Subdivision (a.k.a. The Joint Line) in central Colorado!

A former DRGW GP40-2 coupled to a DRGW caboose, on former DRGW territory.

fjc-

You are the right track (pardon the pun)...but there is something even more significant about this particular (formerly DRGW 3122) GP40-2!

Last DRGW 40-2 delivered from EMD?

Qlives, you are getting warmer! Actually, this unit was the very first Rio Grande engine (of any model) to be patched and then repainted yellow. The unit was patched and officially changed from DRGW 3122 to UP 5245 on May 24, 1997. I saw this unit sitting in North Yard in Denver a few days later, surprised to see the black and white patch (black background, white lettering) on the side of the cab.

I took a picture of the unit in North Yard that day but, as you might expect, it was on film (I only shoot digital anymore), and I'm unsure as to where the picture is now (that was three moves ago)! If I find it, I will scan and post it!!
