BNSF Dash 9 Numbering.
Author: BNSFEng

Scrolling through the BNSF locomotive numbers today (its been a VERY SLOW day) I found that the Dash 9's down to #5001 are on the property with only 5000, 5002, 5005, 5010 and 5023 missing to round out the 5000 to 5099 sequence. Also, today, a new group of Dash 9's begins with Dash 9 #5527 sitting at Cicero, IL. I imagine with this group the direction will be downward as it has been usually going that way. Stay tuned!!

I imagine that 5500-5599 will eventually be full of Dash 9s. 5844-6099 could also be used if they are ordered in time, which I doubt. This series might be used for DC44ES.

According to the latest CTC Board, BNSF is talking to both GE and EMD about new loco acquisitions for 2005 and beyond. It looks like what is on the property or is arriving now is it for 2004. Also, maybe future orders for GEVOs and 70e locos will be mostly or even entirely AC, as the builders are concentrating on that type of loco and have brought the cost closer to that of DC locos and the difference is not as great as in the older series. UP and BNSF also have hordes of DC locos acquired recently and may concentrate on AC, particularly BNSF. Eventually maybe NS will be persuaded to go AC as well, leaving only CN as 100% DC.

NS is not now entirely DC, thanks to the SD80MACs. Don't forget when the Dash 9 is discontinued on December 31st, there will still be a DC GE on the market, DC44ES.

Don't know about if the 5527 is just the first or there is a few above it. Eventually the entire 5500 block will be filled but not sure with what.

So now they are calling it the DC44ES? I thought they were going the other way around, ES44DC and ES44AC.
