I hate it when this happens
Author: WrongWayMurphy

Took a day trip today to a new mill in Broken Bow, OK and on the way
home a coal train was heading south at Denison, TX. Knowing
Lake Ray Roberts is ahead about 30 miles I head thataway
(its on the way home anyway) and set up near one of the
bridges. I figure the train will be along in 10-15 minutes
by the time I park and walk along the shore to this spot.

I wait 15 minutes, 20 minutes, 30, 45 .... finally I am about to
pack it in when I hear a horn - it sounds funny but its a train
horn. Then along comes this contraption ..........

Hey you got some nice pics of those two dead twigs sticking out of the water!

Damn, I hate when this happens too! Used to happen all the time in the early 90's on Tehachapi before I figured out what the work track gang schedules were on the hill.

So did the train show up in time to get a shot of it, or was it completely stabbed by the Maintenance in the Way?

After a few hours at Sandpatch on CSX I would've been happy to have even that!
Sandpatch - I couldn't believe it. Got a nice shot of a shot that would've been a nice shot had I had a shot of a train in the shot.

I have come to terms with photography by adopting the following as a cardinal rule:

Photography WILL make a fool out of you if you give it any opertunity at all.

The only way to counter that is to constantly think about what you are doing. And even then, the element of chance plays a big part.

So the second cardinal rule of photography is:

Go fully prepared to be humbled !

The east portal of the Moffat Tunnel in Colorado is also an important trail head and popular picnic area. I'll never forget the time I was up there with my entire family on a Saturday evening -- parents, inlaws, aunts, etc. The tunnel door opens and there is a light burning in the darkness. I caution everyone to stand well clear of the tracks as who knows what kind of train might blast out of the tunnel -- it could be Amtrak or the ski train or a coal drag or whatever, and it could be moving fast! "Stand back!" I declare. I'll never forget the look on everyone's faces as a UP ballast cleaner rolls out of the tunnel at about five miles an hour, making as much noise as a fast freight! After about five seconds of shock, everyone burst out laughing, and much of it was at my expense. I think my family won't take anything I say about trains seriously again!
