Daylight Sales is now selling the old Arkay Recordings "First Generation Diesels Vol.2" on CD. The first track on this very nice collection of sounds is the CZ climbing the Front Range behind 5771 and company.

Spur track?
Author: gobbl3gook

James--

Is that spur track the Kyune Wye that someone was asking about a month or so ago? (Can't find the thread now). Looks like the right palce--that's taken from the Emma Park Road overpass, isn't it?

Great pic! Thanks for sharing.

Ted-
Are you on the DRGW Yahoo group? I think that's where the discussion was. I couldn't find anything on it here either, but here's what I did find:

Yahoogroup message regarding the Kyune sandstone branch:
http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/DRGW/message/39391
It is the switch for this branch that I believe we are looking at in the photo. I don't know when that branch was taken out of service.

Here is a Terraserver aerial photo of the area:
http://terraserver.homeadvisor.msn.com/image.aspx?t=1&s=10&x=2523&y=22042&z=12&w=1
That photo shows a view of the bridge that I believe the photo was taken from. Actually, not from the bridge proper, but on the road just northeast of where the bridge goes over the tracks--lined up where you could look almost straight down the center (siding) track to the west (which is exactly what we are seeing in the photo).

Here is a little bit wider view of the area on Terraserver, showing the curve to the northwest, which is visible in the distance in the train photo:
http://terraserver.homeadvisor.msn.com/image.aspx?t=1&s=11&x=1261&y=11021&z=12&w=1

The wye track was a little bit southeast (RR east) of these photos, and the grade is visible in this Terraserver overview of the Kyune area (just below right-center):
http://terraserver.homeadvisor.msn.com/image.aspx?t=1&s=12&x=630&y=5509&z=12&w=1

And here is a closeup of what's left of the wye grade:
http://terraserver.homeadvisor.msn.com/image.aspx?t=1&s=10&x=2525&y=22039&z=12&w=1
The curves here almost fit for the curves in the photo, but West Kyune (visible in the train photo) is further west, west of the bridge seen in the aerial photos. Therefore I believe the switch is that of the sandstone branch (I don't know if it actually had a name; Maybe James knows... Also, it appears to me that the road may have been built on the old sandstone branch grade (which might mean that the train photo was not taken from the road but from a similar vantage point). James? Did you take the photo? Was the road built on the grade?

Hope this helps!
-Wes
