UP 4965 SD45T-2 or SD40-2T
Author: SDP-35

Is this unit a true SD-45T-2 or is it a SD40-2T in a SD-45T
carbody. It has the three radiator acces doors, A/C,and those
funny looking front handrails. Is it true or not.

I don't pretend to be an expert, but SD40T-2 would be appears to be the official UP designation as determined by the engine # they assigned to it.

According to Don Strack as of 01/01/01, it was still a SD45T-2. It is ex SSW6871 & ex SP 9363. Normally when UP sticks in a 16 cyl in place of a 20 cyl they class it as a R or M or what ever they feel like at the time. Best way to tell is to look. UP 9363 still traces, but don't know if it is this unit or a SD70M. Most all the SD45 types are long gone.

UP9363 as an SD70M? Hmmm that number series is for the C40-8s not SD70Ms. As for the unit being designated a SD40T-2 that's possible if they put a new engine inside. Remember, all of the SD45T's were derated by the SP because of engine problems so it's possible that the unit was derated and that's why they slapped the SD40T designation on her. I could be wrong, but who knows unless you look inside :)

What I meant was UP 4965 still traces. Sorry about that.

I believe that should be a true 20 cylinder SD45T-2. Several of these units did get repainted by UP. 40 SD45T-2's owned by LLP were rebuilt by VMV in Paducah,KY with 16 cylinder prime movers and classed as SD40T-2 after rebuilding. These locomotives were numbered starting in the 4790 series and went up somewhere in the 4800's.

As was posted earlier in this thread, Don Strack's UP Roster 2001 (in .pdf format only) shows the 4965 as a true SD45T-2 (p.154).

And is indeed a former SSW unit built in 1974.
