MPEX 5000 is classified as an SD50-3. It was originally built as ATSF SD45 1881 and was later renumbered to ATSF 5581. The Santa Fe rebuilt the unit as cabless SD45B 5501:2. It was eventually acquired by Motive Power Industries and was rebuilt at their Boise Locomotive Works as an SD50-3 protoype with comfort cab. The unit was initially leased to Dakota Minnesota & Eastern and was painted and lettered as DM&E 5000. It was returned by DM&E to MPI and is now MPEX 5000.
