Western Railroad Discussion > "That'll do" is done.Date: 02/08/05 15:42 "That'll do" is done. Author: cewherry Recently BNSF revised their rules regarding communicating car lengths when when switching. The time honored "That will do." to signify a stop is required has been replaced by the no nonsense; "Stop".
I suppose the legal-eagle's found that somebody used the 'Well, he never did say to stop' defense once too often. I've heard that ground crews are already getting disciplined for failure to comply. Over a hundred-fifty years of tradition wiped out with a simple stroke of the cursor. Charlie Date: 02/08/05 15:47 Re: "That'll do" is done. Author: WAF Say STOP and he will big hole them.

In the context of a switching move though as in coming to a coupling (joint) , the final 'Stop' will have been preceded by the appropriate car lengths right down to "....1 car, 25 FT, STOP" so the ultimate 'big-hole' should never be utilized. Instead, it'd be something like: "Stop, 4960". Tom Date: 02/08/05 17:01 Re: "That'll do" is done. Author: Gyration If he says stop, let him....it's his job to fix broken knuckles also....;)
Date: 02/08/05 17:12 Re: "That'll do" is done. Author: puckeringswine Railroading is becoming more and more "sterile" every day. That'll do, is too folksy I guess, even though its universal among rails much like "Highball" and "Plug It" I can hear it now "Mr. Engineer, would you please place the train in Emergency."
Date: 02/08/05 17:18 Re: "That'll do" is done. Author: geoffherrig I'll never forget the moment I heard trains on the Coast Line stop calling the "Roseville Coast Dispatcher" and instead call "WR 50" for block authority. That was a depressing day in 1990.

starting to double over a long Z WSLA..... " Santa Fe 107 West, bring them back about 10 cars to the controlled crash.. " Of course, the classic no-no used in WP Rules Classes in the 1970's / early 80's..... " WP 3017, go ahead and back 'em up...." I'll be waiting for an engr to tell the field man "hold on a minute, gotta get down on the ground and see where the "F" is painted on this hi-hood NS SD40-2....." This thread just brought home the realization that I left the railroad before the introduction of train crew radios. Damn, do I feel old! Africansteam Date: 02/08/05 21:26 Re: "That'll do" is done. Author: TheButcherofBena When the word first came down to us after a safety meeting, there was a suggestion that we could accomplish the intended change without causing the hogger to big hole by using the following, "that'll do..stop." A fair compromise, it seemed. Next safety meeting, "'THAT'LL DO..STOP'IS UNACCEPTABLE! You may only say 'stop.'" Simply amazing!
Date: 02/09/05 06:09 Re: "That'll do" is done. Author: James1 This has to be the stupidest thing I've ever heard of. Somebody is paid to come up with this crap. I WANT THAT MAN'S JOB! I could sit around all day with a couple buddies and come up with stuff like this. "Hey, ya know what'd be funny if we made 'em do, and would also add 5 minutes to every move?" "We gotta think up some stupid saying, and have everybody on the railroad saying it on the radio....It won't mean anything, and won't change anything, but people will say it just to keep from getting harassed by "The Man"....I know...."Red Zone"...That's it!" The worst part about this is the UP is like a puppy and follows the BN' on stuff like this like there's a scooby snack in it for 'em.

I understand they call them something dumb like WS What happened to the good old days when they called a dispatcher "Dispatcher or just DS" Date: 02/09/05 10:57 Re: "That'll do" is done.
