Remember when beet trains ran on the SP Westside Line.
Herer is a 30 car train heading west at Volta in 1987.

Very nice. Boy am I glad you were around to photograph those things in their heyday.

But be careful posting things like that. You are apt to give half the board such a bad case of nostalgia it may do them in!

And the other half will just go "huh?"

In Santa Ana on the site of a former sugar beet factory there is now an Embassy Suites. I remember when they built that they were using a revolutionary technique... On the 4th floor a wall that was being lifted up caved in on a worker and he was a fatality. The construction site sat dormant for several days while the investigation went on....

The price of progress?

the price of progress also includes satisfying
shareholders and moving the lifesaver plant from
michigan right across the border to Canada costing
several hundreds jobs. I have not checked and I am
curious as to whether the CAFTA portion of the free
trade agreement was killed off-does anyone konow the
ststus of it?

The hotel is actually on the spoils/waste site for the beet plant(s/e of SP r-o-w, got thatwhite crap all over my shoes one time angling for pix of #1 and racks). The factory footprint is still in some form of ag service as CalAvo has an office there(n/w of SP r-o-w). Common mistake--just my 2cts(not remembering how to squeeze a cent sign out of my dollar key)

CAFTA is being introduced to Congress this year having been held off from public exposure during the presidential election in November.Lou Dobbs on CNN (weekdays 8:00PM) is giving the CAFTA proposal lots of exposure and revealing it as another American job loss proposal. From a railfan point of view it would have widespread job loss in Louisiana sugar producers and heavily impact the Louisiana and Delta R.R.

Nice photo Vic, thanks for posting. I only wish it was larger. And, oh yeah, that scenes like that still existed. Yeah, it does give me a bad case of nostalgia...
