AT&SF Super Fleet units = why the notched roof?

Why did the AT&SF order all of its Dash 8 and Dash9 units with the notches on the cab roof? I note that BNSF continued the trend on their GEs, but not on the SD70MACs or the new GEVOs.

to clear the coal loaders in New Mexico at York Canyon and possibly some other locations.

atsfman is correct. I might add that these cabs are referred to as "gull wing" cabs.

While we are on the subject of York Canyon, does anyone know what kind of activity the mine is seeing these days?

and the first 50 or so of the 500 series warbonnets did not have the gull wing. Jim
