Whos Baldwin was this?
Author: photobob

I took this shot up at the McMcoud the other day. I was wondering what the history of it might be? I was also wondering if there have been anymore adjustments to the TUT train for the Fouth of July weekend with some planned McCloud action? I would sure like to know how they came up with rooms for their passengers in Mt Shasta with the BIG Fourth of July marathon run taking place there. I thought the town was booked up months ago. Plus I thought the McCloud Dinner train was also booked up way in advance for this big weekend. I know they are offering the dinner train as an option. Oh yea and they were able to find rooms out on the coast at the last minute. Anyway not to stir up the pot but what is the lastest on this train?

I could be wrong, but this looks like former US Navy. Just in the last few months, several former US Navy Baldwins ended up on auction. Most were from the Atlantic region.

Trucks up front look like what we did to Medco 8, in converting her last plain bearing to roller. It is also interesting to note, it also looks like this unit may have been setup to run with MU at one point.

I said it before, I'll say it again, why is it when I volunteer on restoration projects, why do I always end up on Baldwins?

A few years ago, the McCloud Railroad reaquired one of their Baldwin switchers ... 30 or 31, I forgot. Could this be it?

I think this is a former Magma unit that was originally McCloud.

That Baldwin started life at McCloud River Railroad #30, built new for the railroad in 1953. It is a S-12. The McCloud sold it to Rayonier in 1963, and it became Rayonier #203 on their logging railroad operation at Sieku (Clallam County), WA. It served there until that operation closed. The unit then went to U.S. Steel in Pittsburg, CA, where it operated up until the early 1990's. That's where it got the yellow paint job. It was U.S. Steel #16. The Feather River Rail Society purchased three of these Baldwin switchers from U.S. Steel. The McCloud Railway purchased the #30 and returned it to McCloud around 1995 or 1996. The unit still carries #203 in the number boards, U.S. Steel #16, and Feather River & Western reporting marks.

I have pictures of the #30 on my website. Go to http://www.trainweb.org/mccloudrails , click on the Locomotive Roster link, and then scroll down to the #30. Click on the number for a page of pictures.

Two McCloud Baldwins went to the Magma Arizona, S-8 #31 and DRS-6-6-1500 #29. The #31 was technically a S-12 with a steel box in place of the turbocharger. The #31 was built in such a way that it could be converted into a S-12 at a later date, but this was never done. The #29 went to the Arizona Railway Museum, and the #31 may still be in Superior. Anyone know for sure?

Yes...I knew the #29 was in running conditions...I've talked to several members of the museum, and I have some of their photos on the website. The #31 was the locomotive I was wondering about...I should have worded that one better than I did...

In my explorations of Superior (a couple of years ago), I never found a locomotive.
