BNSF derailment, Verona MO.
Author: Trainworm

just heard about this on the news tonight.

from the KY3 news website:

VERONA, Mo -- A freight train traveling through Verona in Lawrence County derailed Saturday night, turning over several cars. Authorities say the clean-up could take days. It happened just after 6:30 Saturday evening.
The Burlington Northern Santa Fe train was traveling from Tulsa, Oklahoma to Galesburg, Illinois.

The exact cause of the derailment right now is undetermined. The Aurora fire chief says it appears the engineer was traveling the authorized 25 miles per hour limit. While there were no injuries, the damage was extensive. The cars that turned over were carrying plastic pellets to make food containers, a chemical used in fertilizer and some fuel. Nothing hazardous, but the sheer power of the cars turned parts of the tracks into twisted metal.

Burlington Northern officials separated the cars to allow emergency vehicles through this roadway, and then reattached and pulled away the unaffected cars later. Officials say cleaning up the spills and removing the derailed cars from these tracks could take days.
