New Look for Yolo's Sacramento River Train
Author: shed47

Already having high profile passenger operations on the Sierra R.R. and California Western, parent company Sierra Northern has now upgraded equipment and added a new paint scheme to it's Yolo Shortline excursion runs out of Woodland. Cars have been brought in from the sister companies, rebuilt and appear in a new blue wave with gold paint. Saturday's run had three cars in the new paint: a former commute gallery coach, an open sided car, and a combined open/enclosed car. SLGW102, a stainless steel coach with a new gold window band, was also in the consist. Sierra R.R. GP9 has been transferred from Oakdale to Woodland but Saturday's excursion run used ex- Santa Fe GP7 134. Trains run year round and details can be found at:

In the photo GP7 134 is seen leading Saturday's four car train approaching the end of the line's landmark feature: the 8000' long wood pile Elkhorn Trestle over the Yolo Bypass. Built in 1912 it's reassuring to know that 93 years later passengers can still cross this structure.

Combined open/enclosed excursion car at Woodland in the new blue wave and gold. The rebuilt cars are still not lettered or numbered.

Eastbound at Haviland in near 100 degree heat this past Saturday. The railroad is on a high fill at this point with the river just out of view to the right. Yolo maintains a number of these old station signs along the route.

Just east of the old railroad location of Vin. Despite the rural scene we're only eight miles from downtown Sacramento.

Crossbucks at Woodland give away the line's interurban heritage.

Interesting to see where the Sierra RR has taken this. Looks more like an ocean train than a river train from the passenger cars. However its just not the same without the collection of stainless steel and open flatcars. Having the face of this locomotive on the head end was a special treat in the past.

Nice Pics.

I noticed the CN Business Car _Burrard_ is now in Woodland. Did Hart/YSL buy this from CN? Last I saw it it was in a protective cage at the Pacific Central Station in Vancouver...

The Burrard is privately owned and has been stored on the Yolo (when not in use) since at least 1996. As part of the storage agreement the Yolo use to charter the car out for trips to Reno and other destinations but the last charter was a year or 2 ago. The Burrard was also used on the Santa Specials that use to operate over the entire railroad. So, long story short, the car has been a fixture on the property for some time.
