The first two shows the only remaining crossing gate installation on the Pasadena Sub west of where the rails were chopped. It is Santa Anita Ave. Now granted, there isn't a whole lot of the setup left; many of the lights have been removed and or broken off. Also, the gate arms are broken.

But is this installation still "active"? In other words, if something were to "trip" the signals (I guess there is a detector current running through the rails), would the gates-at least try to-activate?

Click on the second picture. It shows the control shack for the crossing in question. (And the end of active line and bumper in the middle distance) I guess it's in those shacks that the computers or relays or whatever that controls the crossing is in there. Does anyone know if any of this equipment is still inside? If so, would it still be turned on and active, or does the term "abandonment" really mean that-that there are 11 1/2 years of dust and spiderwebs inside the shack? Or have the contents been removed and the shack is empty?

I'm pretty sure the crossing gates at Santa Anita are deactivated. The gate to the right of the northbound lane is in pretty sad shape. I believe it is lashed together to keep it from falling apart, and one of the flashing lights is gone (as seen in your first picture). Interesting that the relay shed still says 'Santa Fe Railway' on it. All of the others west of Claremont have had the Metrolink name and phone number on them for many years.

How long ago were these pictures taken?

These pictures were taken 12/24/2004.

I had a ball that day, with Christmas fever and running around the line getting pictures, chasing a train, and enjoying the goregous weather.
