A Union Pacific coal train has left its mark on Hanna, Wyoming, after 40 coal cars derailed right at the Highway 72 overpass.

Hanna is a small town about 42 miles east of Rawlins.

Union Pacific officials say a coal train headed from Utah to East St. Louis, Illinois, had 40 cars derail.

Heavy equipment from Union Pacific arrived to start the cleanup, which was expected to continue through the night, September 10, 2005. Both mains were ripped up and out of service.

Officials say no one was injured in the derailment.

A few WB empty coal trains bound for Helper area mines were rerouted west of Denver via the Moffat Tunnel.

Wow, we heard the call on the radio, and wondered if the 8423 made it through...luckily it did. I saw a railtrain returning and a full ballast train going that direction but don't know if they were related....

At about 4:20 PM Saturday, the CCOTSH-05 with 3 units and 105 loads of coal (14547 tons) was moving eastward on the Number 2 Main Track at Hanna at 50 MPH when the 36th car experienced a side frame failure, derailing it and the following 39 cars in a general pileup, blocking both main tracks.

No injuries.

Frame failure at 50MPH, I bet that was a lot of coal dust! Glad there were no injuries....

The cars that derailed were a mixture of UP, MCHX, CEFX and FURX.

The one that cause it was UP28414.
