UP 3985, Portola to Roseville (West), through the FRC,
Author: alex14ramos

This is part one: http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?1,989602,page=1

And this is part two: On September 2nd, UP 3985 led a special train from Portola to Roseville. I chased 'er from Portola to Oroville, and that upcoming monday I chased her from Roseville to Tehama. For the Portola to Roseville chase I went with Keith Ode, up until a certain point, and rode with Justin T, and Ted S-P back to the Bay Area. Sunday night, about 8 hours before the steam special was going to depart Roseville (headed for Dunsmuir), I called up a friend and asked if he wanted to chase, he said yes, luckily, the Starlight was running late, we hopped on 14 at Oakland and rode to Sacto, another friend picked us up there at the depot, spent the entire night gambling (won my portion of the gas money playing blackjack) and headed to Roseville to chase the train. Anyways, have to make the story part short, need to finish up the homework due tomorrow.

First shot is 3985 about 15 minutes prior to departure, I am pretty sure they got out on time.

Enjoy,
Alex Ramos

Here is the train at Williams Loop, they were stopped here for about 15 or 20 minutes after UP Western Pacific heritage 1983 crapped out.

Keddie Wye. IIRC, the technical name of it on the railroad is Spanish Creek Trestle.

Rock Creek Trestle, there were A LOT of photogs here! Just made this shot by about 20 seconds, those construction traffic lights made us miss atleast 2 great shots.

A lot of foamers at James too. For some reason when I got out of the car at this spot, I didn't think of taking the telephoto lens off, so after about 3 minutes of thinking about it, I went back to the car to get the 18, and I missed the shot while switching lenses, LOL. Oh well.

Nice shots! Wish I was able to chase 3985 more than just Oroville to Marysville, looks majestic in the FRC. Look forward to more pictures.

Here is the train shortly after departing Oroville, thanks to Ted S-P for this location. It was cool, we were standing at the top of a small hill, so we could see the smoke in the air get closer and closer.
